Fort Benning Installation Guide

Gates & Access

  • Benning Road Gate (Main Gate): open 24/7 for all traffic and visitor processing.
  • I-185 Gate: the fastest route from the interstate, typically open extended daytime hours.
  • Harmony Church Gate: serves the Harmony Church cantonment area, generally open during duty hours.
  • Adults without a DoD ID need a visitor pass from the Visitor Control Center near the main gate. Bring a REAL ID, registration, and proof of insurance.
  • Gate hours change with force protection levels, so confirm current hours before arrival day.

Base Services

  • Main Exchange (PX) & Commissary: both located near the main cantonment area, generally open 9 AM to 7 PM with shorter Sunday hours.
  • Martin Army Community Hospital: primary care, pediatrics, and emergency services for beneficiaries.
  • Army Community Service (ACS): relocation readiness, lending closet, and new arrival orientations.
  • CYS (Child & Youth Services): on-post childcare, youth sports, and school liaison support.

In-Processing Tips

  • Report first to your unit or the reception point listed on your orders, then complete installation in-processing.
  • Bring multiple copies of your orders. You will need them for housing, schools, vehicle registration, and Tricare updates.
  • The housing office handles both on-post applications and off-post referrals, and can review off-post leases on request.
  • Register kids for school as early as possible. Muscogee County accepts enrollment before you physically arrive.

Neighborhood Guide

The best areas for military families depend on commute, schools, and budget. Here is how locals think about the map.

North Columbus

Newer subdivisions, larger lots, and quick access to shopping along Veterans Parkway and Whittlesey Boulevard. A favorite for families who want space and good schools with an easy 20 to 30 minute drive to base.

Midland / Blackmon Road area

Quiet, established neighborhoods on the northeast side with strong schools and plenty of youth sports. Popular with officers and families planning a longer stay.

Fort Benning South / Custer Terrace area (on post)

On-post housing managed through the Fort Benning housing office. Shortest commute possible, gated security, and neighbors who understand PCS life because they are living it too.

South Columbus / Oakland Park

The closest off-post option to the main gates. More affordable rents and a commute to base that can be under 15 minutes, which matters on early report days.

Uptown / Downtown Columbus

Walkable riverfront living along the Chattahoochee with restaurants, the RiverWalk, and whitewater rafting. Great for couples and families who want city energy over yard space.

Phenix City, AL (across the river)

Just across the Chattahoochee in Alabama, with lower cost of living and a short drive to base. Remember to factor in Alabama vehicle registration and school district differences.

Fort Mitchell, AL

A small, rural community south of Phenix City with a slower pace and lower cost of living. Close enough to base for a reasonable commute, with a tight-knit community feel that appeals to families looking for space and quiet.
